AMP Athletic review - New boutique gym
Too competitive, too hard, too soft, too faddy; when it comes to exercise I’m fussy. Which is probably why it’s taken me over a year, two memberships and a dozen classes to find a place that ticks all the boxes.
But, at last, I have – it’s called AMP Athletic, and you’ll find it down a discreet mews off Marylebone High Street.
An ex-car park, turned 6,500sq foot fitness space, this is no ordinary gym. No surprises really, AMP has been set up by Steven Mellor, he of ‘miracle worker’ status, he of ‘the most motivational and results-driven’ expertise. I’d call him a celebrity trainer, but he prefers not to talk about it.
Before we get into the feel-good music and free fruit (so much better than a £6 smoothie, let’s be honest) let’s talk training. Under ‘coach-in-chief’ Mellor’s guidance, the coaching team here (who all themselves hold sports science degrees) focus on his scientific methods "which combine a dynamic approach with unrivalled levels of personal attention." In laymen’s terms, that means plenty of handholding through dozens of the most effective cardio and weight bearing exercises so that you pick up the techniques fast, and the results even faster.
You see, the coaches at AMP are on a mission "to teach you about why you train and create the gym programme that’s right for you," because it shouldn’t be about calorie counting and inch loss, rather it should be about doing, and being, your best. A for accountability, M for motivation and P for progress – get it?

Members can choose between small group personal training sessions (of no more than four people, on the hour, every hour) or the Bolt, Surge and Ride classes which focus on cardio and conditioning, or Flow, a yoga class developed to complement your training.
But fear not, for this is friendly fitness, and by that I mean nothing other than healthy competition. Fitness first-timers will get just as much out of AMP as exercise old-timers will, while all ages will feel absolutely at home here.
Four weeks down the line, and I absolutely feel stronger and more confident – the training here is good. The coaches have that innate ability to know just how much to push me, a natural slacker if I’m not careful. Oh, and I’m still enjoying the music, created specifically for AMP by a top music producer (whose name, just like many of the clients here, remains under wraps).
I saw two fellow beauty directors training at AMP this morning, which is precedent to how good the space is – we have a lot of choice. It also means that I’ve got some training buddies, which helps, because as the team at AMP say "Training with others is fun. It keeps you motivated and holds you accountable." No excuses now.
