Trend: black ribbons

Hair bows may be a perma-trend, but this autumn/winter black ribbons are the way to wear them. Whether thick or skinny, straight or textured, long black ribbons securing ponytails were seen at Dior, Zimmermann and Max Mara (pictured here), presenting the easiest way to dress up one's hair.

At Zimmermann the ribbons weren't bowed but knotted for a simple add-on to a similarly minimal low ponytail.

At Dior, however, bendy black bows were paired with padded black headbands demonstrating that more can be more.

Trend: side partings

While side partings are often seen on the red carpets, accentuating Hollywood waves, centre parts have been favoured on the catwalks for some time. This season though, shows including Acne, Fendi, Anteprima, No.21 and Vivetta (pictured) saw models clearly walk the line on one side or the other.

At Acne, like at Vivetta, models' had their hair tucked behind the ear of the side with less hair showing for a purposefully asymmetric look.

At Bibhu Mohapatra, where hair was styled up, side partings were accentuated with gold lines to really make them pop.

Trend: ballerina buns

Low-slung buns were featured on multiple runways, from Carolina Herrera to Jason Wu, Saint Laurent and Julian Macdonald (pictured) where the shiny finish was enhanced by glitter.

Models at Jason Wu perhaps presented the most literal version of ballerina buns, with a perfected look that could be straight out of a Black Swan show.

Brooches are back, and the hairstyles at Chanel, David Koma and Eudon Choi (pictured) offered a sweet way to wear heirloom pieces in a new way.

Trend: wet 'n' styled

Wet look locks have dominated runways for years, but for 2023 it feels all the more relatable thanks to pop culture's preoccupation with mermaidcore and the impending release of Disney's The Little Mermaid. The textures at Vaquera, Diesel, Fendi, Julien Macdonald, Brandon Maxwell and Etro – seen here – speak to our ethereal aquatic mood.

With a nod to noughties styling, at Brandon Maxwell some wet-look crops were combed back and gelled in place.

Other models at the show presented a softer take on the trend, with lacquered sides to the style and flipped out ends – a look that isn's going anywhere fast.

Every season fashion reinvents the ponytail, and this time the base has had a makeover. At Edward Crutchley (left) it was intricately executed, while Huishan Zhang and Son Jung Wan presented more adoptable takes on the trend.

While an exaggerated version, Son Jung Wan shows that the hair wrap ponytail – concealing one's hairband – looks modern again when styled with a pin-straight hair.

Some traditional hairstyles also cropped up this season, reminding us of much-loved school girl styles that can be given a grownup twist. Bora Aksu, for example, demonstrated the enduring femininity of soft pigtail plaits.
