Gucci launches vegan Horsebit handbags

Publish date: 2024-05-27

Gucci is continuing in its efforts to find more sustainable and animal-friendly alternatives to its products. After launching a number of vegan sneaker styles last year, the house has announced that it has given the Horsebit 1955 bag a vegan makeover, using an animal-free alternative, Demetra.

According to Gucci, the material – which was developed in its own atelier – combines "quality, softness and durability", and marks an exciting chapter in the house's history in displaying the company's commitment to embedding circularity in its collections.

"This Horsebit 1955 is the first Gucci bag ever to be crafted in Demetra, exemplifying Gucci's forward-looking approach as the house’s traditional tanning craftsmanship supports a transformation towards a more ethical fashion future," the brand explained.

"Made from 75 per cent plant-derived raw material sources, the animal-free Demetra is the culmination of two years of research and development by Gucci’s own technicians and artisans and has been produced in Italy since 2021 in a Gucci factory."

For the campaign, the brand has teamed up with musician and friend of the house, Billie Eilish, who appears in a series of videos, which have been woven together, set to her song 'What Was I Made For?' She also features in the print campaign, posing in two different looks where she carries both a plain black and a logo-heavy version of the bag.

The Gucci Horsebit 1955 bags in Demetra are available to buy now.
