Jennifer Lopez debuted a short bob at Paris Fashion Week

The couture shows are synonymous with trends set both on and off the catwalks, the front rows being the ultimate showcase of directional looks from the A-list. And even as of day one of Couture Fashion Week autumn/winter 2023, we've seen not one, but two striking hair transformations take place from attendees – Zendaya's futuristic looking micro-fringe, and Jennifer Lopez's equally short bob.

It's a stark departure from Lopez's signature red carpet glamour – which typically features full-bodied cascading Hollywood waves, or some kind of voluminous while sleek up-do. Her blunt, flicked out bob has a much cooler energy, and she oozed confidence pairing it with a white textured coat (made of 7,000 real rose petals!) and instantly recognisable Schiaparelli accessories for the fashion house's show.

Her short bob, and its immaculate styling, was the work of Lopez's longtime hairdresser Chris Appleton, who is yet to reveal his process but shared the look on social media alongside his iconic client.

In contrast to the trending 'old money' bob, which is styled with bouncy volume and a soft yet polished finish, Lopez's look at the Schiaparelli reads edgier; with a wet-look piecey texture and flippy ends (another hot trend, regardless of length). It appears to be cut with blunt lines and minimal layering, though – which allows the bob to be styled in both ways, and no doubt she'll demonstrate the haircut's versatility in coming appearances.

To achieve Lopez's look as it is here, follow hairstylist Larry's King's tips for nailing the ‘the hair flip’ silhouette. “Apply a mousse [like King’s My Nanna’s Mousse] to wet hair,” to ensure soft, bouncy volume, and smooth out the hair while blow-drying with a round brush, he instructs.

Next, “work the hair into a neat centre or side parting and use the round brush and hairdryer to flick the ends upwards”.

To finish, “smooth down any flyaways using the Flyaway With Me Kit” – a flight-friendly tube of the smoothing finishing cream A Social Life for Your Hair, with a dual-ended bamboo brush and comb to tame and tidy. This would also lend the hair some high-gloss texture a la Lopez.
