Margot Robbies Deconstructed Suit Dress References a Barbie Look
As award season rages on, Margot Robbie continues to pull out surprise look after surprise look, with plenty of Barbie references along the way. Her latest was a little black dress that looked like a deconstructed suit, which the actor and producer wore Sunday night to the 35th Producers Guild of America Awards.
Robbie’s LBD was pulled from the Balmain Pre-Fall 2024 collection, and the actor—with help from stylist Andrew Mukamal—appeared to have tweaked the piece, so that it referenced a vintage look once worn by the Mattel doll she played in last year’s summer blockbuster.

The off-the-shoulder minidress featured a plunging neckline, accentuated by a thick white accent strip along the hem. The sharply flared skirt mirrored the shape of the top of the dress. Robbie paired the LBD with a matching black trapezoidal clutch from Hunting Season and jet-black heels. She also accessorized with a silver princess necklace composed of large diamonds from Jacob & Co.

For the Barbie star’s appearance at the Producers Guild Awards, at Hollywood’s Ray Dolby Ballroom, her dress was stitched with two additional lapels along the breast, which were used to tone down the plunging neckline. If you look closely, you can see the two sides are stitched together and that there is a tiny keyhole of sheer fabric in the center, which was not present in the original design.
Since the press tour for Barbie began, Robbie has worn numerous outfits inspired by dresses sold with the doll, and this ensemble was not an exception. While it didn’t appear to be an exact replica of a Barbie look, it had plenty of similarities to the 1962 “After 5” Barbie, who wore a black mini with a similar A-line skirt and contrasting white lapels at the top. The well of Barbie inspiration really is bottomless.
