Nicole Kidman says being married to Tom Cruise stopped her being sexually assaulted

In light of the #MeToo movement, Nicole Kidman has spoken about her former marriage to Tom Cruise, saying that the relationship prevented her from being sexually assaulted.

In an interview with New York Magazine published this week, the 51-year old actress, who was married to Tom Cruise for ten years from the age of 22, says that while she is reluctant to talk about her former marriage - "because I’m married now to the man who is my great love [Keith Urban], and it almost feels disrespectful" - it was a marriage that gave her "protection" in the industry.

"I got married very young, but it definitely wasn’t power for me — it was protection," she says, "I married for love, but being married to an extremely powerful man kept me from being sexually harassed. I would work, but I was still very much cocooned. So when I came out of it at 32, 33, it’s almost like I had to grow up."

She adds, "Of course I’ve had #MeToo moments — since I was little! But do I want to expose them in an article? No. Do they come out in my work? Absolutely. I’m open and raw. I want to have my well of experience and emotion tapped into, used — and I’m not just talking about sexual harassment. I’m talking about loss, death, the full array of life. But it has to be by the right people so it’s not abused again."

Kidman goes on to reference the movie she is working on with Charlize Theron and Margot Robbie about the Roger Ailes and Gretchen Carlson lawsuit. Carlson, a former anchor at Fox News famously filed a sexual harassment case against Fox's late company chairman Roger Ailes and received a $20 million settlement and public apology in 2016.

The movie will focus on Ailes’ downfall as seen through the eyes of a group of female employees and Lionsgate is reportedly in negotiations to back the film.
