Suits costume designer Jolie Andreatta shares her advice for dressing well at work

Publish date: 2024-06-02

Why is what you wear to work important? Well, aside from allowing you to present yourself as professional and polished, having a good workwear wardrobe can also help inspire you in the office, according to Suits costume designer Jolie Andreatta.

"When you wear something that makes you feel good - consciously or subconsciously - you’re inspired," she told us, fresh from working on season eight of the hit series.

It's long been suggested that there's a positive link between what we wear and how we act - and nowhere is this more apparent than in the workplace - just don't refer to it as 'power dressing'.

"I’m not crazy about the phrase 'power dressing'; it brings up an aggressive feeling for me," says Andreatta. "I prefer 'focused' - an elegant, styled look that can be edited or highlighted for atmosphere."

Here are her 7 tips for dressing as well as Jessica Pearson, Rachel Zane and co.

1. Shoes

"Invest in beautiful shoes you can actually last at least most of the day in."

2. Stock up on white shirts, blouses and tops.

"They go with everything and can be worn throughout the week. However, they don’t last forever, so refresh your stock of white whenever needed."

3. Great pencil skirts look good on everyone

"No matter your size or style."

4. Find matching tops and trousers

"I love this look, but it’s not on the market very often, so grab it when you see it. I just bought a Maison Margiela black sleeveless top with a draped back and matching trousers. I see it as soft suiting."

5. Collect timeless designer jackets

"Whether new, vintage or reclaimed. Wear them like jewellery."

6. Fit is everything

"If it doesn’t fit properly, you’re distracted, not present."

7. Make it yours

"Altering even the simplest suit to your proportions and personality makes it unique. Then, add a little something. Even the right fragrance can do the trick."
