The Fashion Week Cheat Sheet: Tory Burch AW24
Each season, we break down everything you need to know about the new collections in The Fashion Week Cheat Sheet. After speaking to the designers about their inspiration, their hero pieces, the faces on the catwalk and the names on the front row, we present your complete guide to autumn/winter 2024.
Tory Burch is in a new era. The designer – whose spring/summer 2024 collection was one of the biggest talking points of New York Fashion Week last September – made headlines again, this time with a collection that aimed to make the "everyday sublime". Lamp shades, old jackets and even shower caps served as inspiration for Burch, who put texture and silhouette at the centre of the collection.
"I really feel like a new designer in many ways," Burch said backstage after the show, reflecting on how she is able to focus far more on the creative now. "When I first started the company, it was all about the product – I was the CEO for 14 years and it was not my gift. I just felt like jack of all trades, master of none...This is now a more personal expression. I wish I'd done it sooner."
Clearly, her new approach is working. The designer – who is finding new customers with every collection – presented more covetable classics that will no doubt fly off the shelves.

Theme and inspiration
"For autumn/winter 2024, we continued to explore volume and silhouette in new ways," Burch explained of the collection, adding that she was thinking a lot about architecture and sport. "We took a lot of the traditional men's ideas and applied uber sport detailing – I really wanted to create volume without weight. One of the main things was how do we have things that look structural that aren't heavy, but also really adhere to the body and think about form."

There were dresses and jackets with sharp silhouettes, metallic fringed coats which were all about texture, bright-coloured skirts paired with tight-fitting hoodies, lots of leather and sheer dresses. It was all about "sharp edges, unusual textures, and technical sport details" Burch explained.
Some of these pieces had been engineered from the inside out, an approach which is usually used in handbag construction. She also left some seams raw-cut, heat-sealed, and bonded to add dimension without weight. "They're almost like origami," Burch said of the fabric.

The setting
The New York Public Library played host for Burch's show this season, a location chosen because it is a "regular destination" for the team's "design and creative research".

Hero pieces
The very elevated take on the hoodie will no doubt be a hit from this collection – they were accessorised with embellished brooches and paired with statement skirts, while the super textured coats and dresses are likely to be big news for the red carpet.
