We're Obsessed: A Ring with Superpowers

Publish date: 2024-05-26

The '90s were a good time for spiritually minded jewelry—mood rings, ying-yang symbols and evil eyes ruled the costume world. Marlo Laz is bringing the latter back into the style conversation with a fine bijoux spin—created from onyx, "based on the stone's power of protection," and opal, which "reflects one's unique vision," according to Laz. And it's a symbol that's close to her heart.

"At the age of 14, on my first trip to Istanbul, my grandparents bought me an incredible antique clay and gold evil eye bracelet on a leather strap. It was the first jewelry talisman I ever received, and I continue to carry it with my to this day," the designer explains. "I am fascinated by the shape and mystery of eyes in general—from Dali's use of surrealism to Marissa Berenson's iconic, wide-eyed gaze. They reveal a person's soul and are a constant source of inspiration in my collections."
